Internship Photo Essay

As I first started out at my internship I was given simple tasks such as filing, rearranging folders as they saw fit and physically taking apart computers. When my mentor first told me this I thought that I wasn’t going to get the full internship experience but I sucked it up and decided to just do the work and see if I would be getting anything harder in the future. At first I wasn’t the best at Dreamweaver but as time progressed I was given more and more tasks to work on. For example in the beginning it was mainly just rewording words but near the end I was linking and creating code for different parts of the websites. This only lasted for about a week then my mentor started giving me actual work to do. I felt like I was a bird and I was being released into the wild where I could learn how fly from the other birds.

Since I didn’t know that much about making websites on Dreamweaver they had me start on some basic web designing, which was at first just adding and taking things out. The little that they had taught me was more than I knew from school because there I thought that I knew the basics but it turns out that I was wrong. After learning that little bit from my mentor I wished I had known the material earlier when I was working on the Media Saves The Beach website. This didn’t bother me because at that time all I wanted to do was just get my work done then leave to go home. Sometimes it would be replacing words and other times it would be add pictures they even had me work with some code a few times. This became so easy that I found ways to do it faster for example, when I would be adding in photos or videos I would copy a picture of video already on the website and then just paste it next to it. Next I would go to the code and just make the corrections I needed so that it was what I wanted to have on it. Many people would call that lazy but I say it’s resourceful because I learned how to work around the system and do things in my own way.

One of the first website that I work on was called Global Oceanic and I had been asked to create the FAQ page. So I had to start by first putting the questions on the website I then had to create mini links for each and every questions. I felt that this was a really great way for me to learn some tricks for the future in case I ever need to do it again. However, this required me to look on the Internet and find how I was supposed to even attempt this. At first I was stuck but then I asked a fellow worker on how to do it and helped to guide me into the right direction. This experience also taught me to not be afraid to ask for help from the other employees. Now I don’t feel as shy or ashamed to ask for help if I’m stuck on a problem or lost because if I don’t then I will never get anywhere and remain stuck on that problem. I now know how important it is to raise your hand and ask for help.

The next website I worked on was for a company called DICA, for this website I was asked to add products to their product page. This was a bit easier because all I had to do was to add the product and to include its dimensions; the amount it weighted and I also had to give a picture of the product. This had taught me how to use a simpler style of making websites because for this website I had to fill in the blanks with each of the items requirements. This was a simple project but took a while because there at least 30-40 different products that I had to full into the blanks. I was finished with this project much faster than the other projects I was working on. This was mainly due to the fact that the site builder I had been using was very user friendly. This ment that it was very easy to use and can easily be taught to other people who may be struggling with web design. Luckily I was the only web design intern there other wise I might have had to have taught that person how to using the web page builder.

Now that I had become more comfortable with using Dreamweaver my mentor Adam decided to let me do some of the harder things that his client had been asking to do. So I started to work more on the harder things like adding tabs to the KEZA website, I would also be adding links to different website, linking videos on to the website that were viewable from right there. I was also given the task to create the gallery page, which showed of the different events that the KEZA Company had been doing. I found this to be a very easy thing to do because all I had to do was to put an image on page then I would link it another page that was full of the images I wanted in the gallery. The best part about working on the website was that every day after work I would show my mom the work I had done so as the days progressed she noticed the many changes to the website. This was a great way for me to show what I had learned from my time at my internship. In the end the website turned out to be the best website that I had ever done and many of my fellow students felt that this was very professional and looks very good.

Internship 12

On the website Global Oceanic I created the FAQ web page but along the way i ran into some trouble with the background. The problem was that there was to much text so it wasn't able to cover it all. So he helped me and fixed it so that it did include all of the page.

In the course of one typical workday, how many different people do you directly work with? How many people are indirectly affected by your work.
I will usually work with either one or two people in during the course of a work day. My work really doesn't affect people because all i do is design a website which is then just put online and any other corrections i actually make.

Describe your direct collaboration with others—how does it go & how does it influence the work?
I will ask for work to do and i will ask for help from the other programmers if i am stuck and need help.

Describe your indirect impact on others through your work—there are probably many people you never actually see who are affected by your work. How does this happen? How does this influence your work?
Well since i work on web design i never get to see how people are affected because of my work but, since my work helps out other companies they are able to have professional web pages that are both informative and appealing.

Feel free to continue writing about collaboration. How might people work differently in your job in the future? How might different resources change the way we work? How might a different manager or mentor want people to work? How would you use collaboration if you were in charge?

Internship 11

During the course of this week i had been working on three different sites they were dica, KEZA, and global oceanic. For Dica they had me adding products to the pages and had me list all the sizes of each item. For Keza i am still fixing it all around adding and fixing mutiply pages and learning all this type of new code. On Global Oceanic i had to add the FAQ page and make sure it worked and made sure that i looked the same as the other pages.

My highlights this week have been working on the Global Oceanic page because it wasn't as stressful to work on unlike the KEZA website this being because i'm not fixing the whole webstie only a page or two.

The challenges this week have been working on KEZA because there are so many little things that i have to do. They are very stressful and time consuming but i was able to complete them for the most part.

The most memorable thing for me was learning about the different sytles of making a website because i have found out that there are some page builders that are really user friendly and are easy to use while there are some that require a lot of code and will take quite some time to use if you don't know what you are doing

2. This is the website Global Oceanic that i worked on today i created the FAQ page. doing this really hasen't made me think about our world or how they affect it. maybe in the future i may be more inclined to care more about that situation on a later date but now this is irrelevant to what i am doing .

3. I will be asking him how is his business doing, what is his favorite part about his job, why he enjoys his job so much, what inspired him to start a business, and if he thinks that he has made an impact to other business because of his decision to go into web designing and graphics.

Internship 8

I have new appreciation for my mom because everyday when i would get home from school she would always be really tired and i would just call her old because all she does is work on a computer all day. I wasn't until i started going to internship that i understand how my mom feels at the end of the day becasue several times last week by the time i got home i would be really tired from working on the computer for 7 hours. Now i know what my mom goes through on a daily basis and becasue of this experience i won't be making fun of her for that anymore.

The only times that i would ever work with the other programers was if i needed any help on something other wise they were busy working on a website.

I was taught pretty much how to make my own website through dreamweaver i was not expecting this because i thought they would have had me doing something else like working on computers fixing any problems that they had.

My First Day
I woke up around 5:30 this morning eager to find out how my first day of internship was going to turn out. I had a bowl of rice crispies because breakfast is the most important meal of the day. My mom drove me to her office because my internship is only about a 10 minute walk form there. When I first arrived at my site I was greeted by me mentor who was surprised at my outfit because when I first met him I dressed very professional and now I was wearing very casual clothes. I work in a small building office that is located along India Street in Little Italy. For lunch I was eating my turkey sandwich and working on fixing a website. For the afternoon I worked on fixing this website that helps to spread awareness about women in Africa who have just come out of prostitution and poverty and are now making necklaces to sell so that they can make money. Over the course of this next week I see myself fixing up this website. I think that this internship will prepare me for this type of field should I decide to go into it. I need to learn more coding for dreamweaver. Knowing that the work I’m doing actually is going to be seen by people. That I will get stuck and not know what to do to fix it because it’s my first time doing everything in coding. I drove home in my mom's car it was stop and go until I got to the freeway then it was smooth sailing.
